Program Overview

About the Fellowship

The Cất Cánh (Takeoff) Fellowship is administered by Dr. Loi Nguyen (EVP Emeritus, Marvell) and the VISEMI Foundation to build Vietnam’s global technology leadership pipeline. The program accelerates high-potential STEM students into fully funded MS/PhD programs in the USA, Taiwan, Korea, Japan, and the EU through structured coaching and long-term ecosystem engagement.

Much more than a scholarship — the program features an intensive 6-month Fellowship Accelerator that bridges gaps in readiness through structured English preparation, strategic application coaching, mock interviews, and direct connections to the VISEMI Ambassador and Mentor network worldwide.

Every application is evaluated by 25+ MS/PhD-level reviewers drawn from VISEMI’s global network of experts — ensuring each candidate receives serious, expert-level consideration.

The Problem

The Gaps We're Bridging

Talent Gap

A massive global shortage of technical professionals in high-level semiconductors and advanced tech leaves Vietnamese talent without a clear path forward.

Overseas Pathways

With limited local MS and PhD opportunities, fully funded programs in the USA, Taiwan, Korea, Japan, and the EU offer the strongest long-term paths for talented STEM students.

Systemic Barriers

Surveys and interviews reveal that STEM talent faces financial, language, and strategic roadblocks that limit their access to overseas education — regardless of academic merit.

The Bridge

A 6-Month Accelerator

Intensive Prep

Structured English training and application coaching to build world-class graduate school application materials from the ground up.

Milestone Funding

Up to $15K per student via a tiered financial support system covering living stipends, test fees, application costs, and conference attendance.

Global Mentorship

Each fellow is paired with VISEMI ambassadors and worldwide experts across Silicon Valley, Taiwan, Korea, Japan, and the EU.

The Alumni Flywheel

Every fellow commits to mentoring the next cohort — creating a self-sustaining cycle of Vietnamese tech talent that grows stronger with every class.

Webinar Recap

STEM Graduate Study Abroad: Your Roadmap to MS/PhD Programs

The Cất Cánh 2026 Webinar was designed for STEM students who are seriously considering graduate study abroad but aren’t sure where to start. In this session, we brought together voices from different stages of the journey — from navigating early barriers to building careers at the frontier of global technology.

Takeoff Journey Panel Discussion

Our guest speakers shared their personal paths into global STEM careers and MS/PhD programs:

  • Mr. Bao-Anh Nguyen – CEO, VSAP Lab (Vietnam); Admin, Vietnamese Semiconductor Community. Started from a background unfamiliar with chip design, studied in Korea, accumulated 20+ years in the semiconductor industry, and returned to help build Vietnam’s technology capacity.
  • Dr. Cong Trinh – Engineering Manager at Applied Materials (USA). Overcame language and financial barriers to study abroad, and is now a co-founder of VISEMI Foundation.
  • Dr. Loi Nguyen – EVP Emeritus, Marvell; Co-Founder, Inphi Corporation (USA). Went from community college to a Cornell PhD and co-founded Inphi, which was acquired by Marvell for $10 billion in 2021.

Program Details & Application Guidance

Our program managers walked through the Cất Cánh Fellowship structure, tier breakdown, and what makes a strong application:

  • Linh Vu – Program Manager, Cất Cánh; MS in Materials Science, Stanford University
  • Lan Pham – Program Manager, Cất Cánh; MS in Embedded Systems, University of California, Irvine

Attendees got a direct look at how the program addresses the most common gaps Vietnamese STEM students face — financial barriers, English proficiency, strategic preparation, and access to mentorship — and how the 6-month accelerator is structured to address each one.
